22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Benjamin%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Frable%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Charlotte%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Seid%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Greg%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Rouse%22%7D%2C%7B%22creatorType%22%3A%22author%22%2C%22firstName%22%3A%22Philip%22%2C%22lastName%22%3A%22Hastings%22%7D%5D%2C%22abstractNote%22%3A%22The%20Scripps%20Institution%20of%20Oceanography%20%28SIO%29%20at%20the%20University%20of%20California%2C%20San%20Diego%20maintains%20one%20of%20the%20largest%20combined%20oceanographic%20collections%20in%20the%20world%20comprising%20four%20collections%3A%20Geological%20%28sediment%20cores%20and%20dredged%20rocks%29%2C%20Pelagic%20Invertebrates%2C%20Benthic%20Invertebrates%20and%20Marine%20Vertebrates.%20After%20surviving%20threats%20of%20dissolution%2C%20the%20SIO%20Collections%20are%20now%20securely%20funded%20and%20have%20been%20able%20to%20make%20other%20collections%20available%20to%20the%20scientific%20community.%20Over%20the%20last%20few%20years%2C%20both%20the%20Marine%20Vertebrate%20%28SIO-MVC%29%20and%20Benthic%20Invertebrate%20%28SIO-BIC%29%20Collections%20have%20received%20National%20Science%20Foundation%20%28NSF%29%20and%20institutional%20funding%20to%20integrate%20important%20at-risk%20collections%20from%20University%20of%20California%2C%20Los%20Angeles%20%28UCLA%29%2C%20the%20Monterey%20Bay%20Aquarium%20Research%20Institute%20%28MBARI%29%20and%20the%20University%20of%20Victoria.%20The%20UCLA%20Ichthyological%20Collection%2C%20around%209000%20lots%2C%20was%20at%20risk%20of%20disposal%20due%20to%20hazardous%20material%20concerns%20and%20lack%20of%20institutional%20support.%20The%20collection%2C%20accumulated%20primarily%20under%20Boyd%20Walker%20%281949-1980%29%20and%20later%20Don%20Buth%20%281980-%29%2C%20contains%20material%20from%20extensive%20surveys%20of%20the%20near-shore%20fishes%20of%20Southern%20California%2C%20Baja%20California%20and%20the%20Tropical%20Eastern%20Pacific%20including%20remote%20oceanic%20islands%20such%20as%20the%20Revillagigedos%2C%20Clipperton%20and%20the%20Galapagos.%20The%20UCLA%20collection%20also%20contains%20over%20150%20secondary%20types%20and%20over%20100%20species%20new%20to%20the%20SIO-MVC.%5Cn%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Due%20to%20lack%20of%20support%2C%20the%20collection%20records%20were%20never%20digitized%20and%20the%20collection%20was%20minimally%20curated%20and%20its%20holdings%20were%20poorly%20known.%20For%20over%20two%20years%2C%20the%20collection%20manager%20and%20student%20employees%20have%20physically%20re-curated%20and%20integrated%20this%20material%20into%20the%20SIO-MVC.%20These%20data%20are%20now%20available%20online%20via%20iDigBio%20and%20VertNet%20and%20have%20already%20been%20used%20in%20numerous%20studies.%20The%20SIO-BIC%2C%20holding%2045%2C000%20lots%2C%20is%20accepting%20ownership%20of%20two%20deep-sea%20animal%20collections%20from%20Verena%20Tunnicliffe%20at%20the%20University%20of%20Victoria%20and%20Robert%20Vrijenhoek%20at%20MBARI.%20These%20collections%20include%2010%2C900%2B%20lots%2C%20largely%20from%20hydrothermal%20vents%20across%20the%20Pacific.%20Collected%20over%2035%20years%20from%20remote%20deep-sea%20sites%20that%20are%20difficult%20and%20expensive%20to%20access%2C%20these%20collections%20represent%20a%20major%20resource%20for%20systematics%2C%20genetics%2C%20and%20ecology.%20With%20Dr.%20Vrijenhoek%20now%20retired%20and%20Dr.%20Tunnicliffe%20nearing%20retirement%2C%20their%20collections%20were%20at%20risk%20of%20being%20lost.%20This%20material%20will%20be%20made%20discoverable%20online%20through%20the%20SIO-BIC%20database%20and%20iDigBio%2C%20and%20will%20be%20available%20for%20loan%20and%20examination.%20In%20the%20last%20year%2C%20the%20collection%20manager%20and%20five%20undergraduate%20employees%20have%20integrated%20some%203%2C000%20lots.%20With%20support%20from%20the%20institution%20and%20the%20NSF%2C%20the%20SIO%20collections%20are%20solidifying%20their%20roles%20as%20central%20repositories%20for%20deep-sea%20and%20Eastern%20Pacific%20fauna.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222018-06-13%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.3897%5C%2Fbiss.2.26259%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%222535-0897%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%5C%2F%5C%2Fbiss.pensoft.net%5C%2Farticles.php%3Fid%3D26259%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%22SNFNQMHP%22%2C%22CMP7B6WT%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222024-02-28T23%3A34%3A05Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
